Oxnard, California nestled along California's Central Coast makes an ideal destination for either a vacation getaway or daytime visit. The seaside city is filled with numerous attractions appealing to a wide audience. Oxnard's early history is unveiled at historic Heritage Square located at 7th and "A" Street in downtown Oxnard. Heritage Square contains a group of restored turn-of-the-century Victorian and Craftsman-style houses from the Oxnard Plain, once owned by Oxnard's pioneer families. The restorations are joined by other historic structures in the Square, all dating back from 1876 to 1912. Also on site are a visitor's center, award-winning community theater and church surrounded by lush grounds, brick pathways and manicured gardens. Tours are offered every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
A wide variety of classic, milestone, special interest vehicles including a large collection of Packards, can be found at the Murphy Auto Museum. The Museum houses some 50 cars displayed by many collectors from the tri-county area in its 45,000 square foot building located at 2230 Statham Boulevard. Owner, Dan Murphy, a former neurosurgeon, is passionate about bringing collectables to his facility and recently added an extensive vintage clothing display representing all decades from the 1890's to the 1970's. Murphy Auto Museum is open Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Suggested donations are $6 for adults and $3 for children.
Once a household name, Woolworth memorabilia has been preserved at the historic F.W. Woolworth Building in downtown Oxnard located at 212 W. Fourth Street. The only one of its kind in the world to preserve Woolworth's history, the Museum is filled with hundreds of rare Woolworth items and photos from across the country. Included is an antique phone booth with working dial pay-phone, classic "take-your-own photo" booth, antique vending machines and other period features all in the 1950's-1960's theme. Also onsite is the Experimental Café & Deli, drawing on the "Jetson's" futuristic architectural style.
The largest Kosher winery on the west coast, Herzog Wine Cellars is among Oxnard's highlights and is a testament to the Herzog family's commitment to making great wine. The 77,000 square-foot winery, located at 3201 Camino Del Sol, contains two private tasting rooms, a visitor's center, conference room, outdoor patio and onsite Tierra Sur Restaurant, featuring delectable Mediterranean cuisine by Chef Todd Aarons, a veteran of Zuni Café
in San Francisco and Savoy in Manhattan. An Expanded gift shop is also on premises offering exclusive products from around the world in addition to imported international wines, gourmet foods, luscious chocolates and a selection of hand-rolled imported cigars. Self-guided tours of the winery are offered free of charge.
On the waterfront, Maritime history comes alive at the Ventura County Maritime Museum featuring nautical displays, models of historic sailing ships, a world-class art collection and special exhibits. The Museum, located at 2731 S. Victoria Avenue, has one of the two largest collections of antique Prisoner of War sailing ship models in the United States. Models trace maritime history over 3,000 years from reed boats to modern day carriers. The Ventura County Maritime Museum is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Seniors and children are just $1.
Just 12 miles offshore from Oxnard are the majestic Channel Islands. Excursions to Anacapa and Santa Cruz Island are offered via Island Packers departing directly from Channel Islands Harbor, Oxnard. Whale Watching Season runs December through March where visitors can view the spectacular Pacific Gray Whales as they make their annual journey.
